A soon-to-be honours in education graduate has walked away with the title of Miss South Africa at Johannesburg’s Carnival City earlier this evening. Wits University graduand Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, 23, has become the 58th Miss South Africa.

Kunene, originally from Mpumlanga, finished her honours degree at Wits last year.

Speaking to Wits Vuvuzela last week, Kunene said her passion is education and teaching and that this will remain her focus in her reign as Miss South Africa if she were to be crowned.

She also said that the title will be a “springboard” for her to accomplish her own personal goals and touch people’s lives.

Answering the public’s question:  “What makes you a proud South African woman?”, in the final stages of the competition, Kunene said, “it is the legacy that the women have marched for in 1956 to the Union Buildings.

Leaving a legacy of women with opportunities so that we today can enjoy those opportunities, strive for them and that other girls following us to also achieve the same”.

The first princess is Elizabeth Molapo, a student from the University of the Free State, and the second princess is Tayla Skye, a student from the University of Pretoria.
