Student’s summer bodies will have to wait as the proposed Wits Technogym opening has been delayed until January 2017
Students and staff who had signed up for the new Wits Technogym will be disappointed to know that the opening, originally scheduled for July 2016, has been postponed to January 2017.
“Unfortunately due to contractual issues and negotiations with the Wits partner, the project could not start earlier,” said Marius Henn, senior admin manager for Wits Sport.
The partner in question, Penta Systems, will be responsible for procuring all the equipment and running the facility on behalf of Wits Sport once the project is completed.
Henn, however, assured Wits Vuvuzela that students and staff who had signed pre-release contracts for the gym earlier this year will not be charged the proposed fee of R900, which would have been charged for the period of July – December had the gym opened on time. In addition, they will be under no obligation to sign another contract for 2017, although they will be contacted to be offered new contracts if they wish.
So those who were planning to sculpt summer bodies during the winter months will have to make due with the facilities of the Old Mutual Gym, whose fees may be increased slightly for 2017 to “accommodate qualified gym personnel”, which, according to Henn, is a requirement for industry standards.
The new gym will be located above the squash complex, opposite Hall 29.
