A man was killed in a drive-by shooting which started on the corner of Bertha and Jorrisen streets outside the Wits Arts Museum at 18:40pm last night.

Three men in a gold Toyota Corolla were shot at by the occupants of a VW Golf which drive alongside as the vehicles moved down Bertha street towards the Nelson Mandela bridge. The driver of the Corolla died at the scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. The two survivors were taken by amblances to the hospital for treatment.

Bongani Motwatong who witnessed the shooting, told Wits Vuvuzela, “there was a black VW Golf on the right side of the driver and a BMW in front blocking the Corolla.” Several shots were fired into the driver’s side of the Corolla. According to Motwatong the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a dustbin outside the old Pikitup building on Bertha street. The police quickly closed off Jorissen street as the deceased’s body was removed.

Nonkululeko Njilo, a Wits Vuvuzela journalist who also witnessed the incident, said, “I was walking down with my headphones on … I heard several shots and stopped to see what was happening and two cars were shooting at a Corolla which then moved to the other side of the road. Because everything happened so fast I went closer only to find that the driver was shot several times and was already dead.” According to Njilo, the VW fled the scene after the crash into the bin.

The police declined to answer questions at the scene and it is unclear if any arrests have been made or who the victims are.
