GARY BUCHMAN, a Wits alumnus, has been named one of the most respected attorneys in North America by law-ranking service Best Lawyers.
Buchman made the Best Lawyers in America 2018 list under the real estate category.

He is among 54 000 lawyers from 145 practices who are included in the 2018 edition. Buchman was selected through an exhaustive peer review evaluation that focused on professional abilities and experience.
Buchman obtained a BCom in 1974, and a LLB in 1977 at Wits University. He holds a master’s of law qualification from the University of Miami, Florida. He passed the Massachusetts Bar Exam in 1980 and is a member of the Massachusetts Bar.
He is an equity partner at Sherin and Lodgen, a mid-size firm in Boston, Massachusetts. His practice is focused on commercial real estate leasing, development, financing, and franchising transactions.
Buchman told Wits Vuvuzela that he is gratified by the peer recognition for his work and skills. “I very much appreciate the honour,” he said.
He added that any South African attorneys who want to make it big internationally have to learn good skills. “Work harder than your competition, and be honorable and accountable,” said Buchman.
Strategic partnership manager at the Wits school of law, Adanma Yisa, told Wits Vuvuzela that Buchman’s recognition as one of the 2018 best lawyers in America is a great achievement. “It is always wonderful to hear of Wits school of law alumni doing well in their respective fields, both locally and internationally,” she said.
Yisa added that Buchman joins other illustrious Wits school of law alumni that are well respected in their fields both locally and internationally. “These alumni include George Bizos, Thuli Madonsela and Richard Goldstone,” she said.
