The Wits University SRC has said rejected claims that several of its members have been academically excluded.

The Wits Students Representative Council (SRC) has denied allegations that seven of its members have been academically excluded. The allegations against the EFF-run SRC were made via a statement purportedly released by the Wits branch of the South African Students Congress (SASCO) and published on the official Wits PYA (Progressive Youth Alliance) twitter account last Friday, January 26.

Wits SRC Secretary General, Warren Makoga, told Wits Vuvuzela that the allegations of academic exclusions, also made against the SRC president, were not true. “As far as we know, all the members of the SRC are eligible to register. Those that have not registered will be doing so over the course of this week,” he said.

The statement which was deleted hours later asked that “the 7 SRC members should step down and try saviour (sic) their academics because their stay in office will result in uncertain and unstable leadership”. The statement claimed that the exclusions effectively resulted in the “immediate dissolve of the SRC.”

SASCO Wits Main Campus branch chairperson, Nonkululeko Mntambo, denied that this statement had been released by the organisation saying the contents reflected “the view of a member of who is yet to be identified. It is in no way the view of SASCO Wits Main Campus Branch”.

“We found it very wrong and do not even understand why people would use the issue of academic exclusions for political reasons,” Makoga said.
