Wits men’s basketball kick off Inner City Super League with a big win.
The Wits Horny Bucks kicked off their Inner City Super League (ICSL) season with a triumphant 104-73 win over the African Basketball Academy (ABA) Eagles.
The Wits men’s basketball were in good form during their first official game of the 2018 season at the Wits basketball courts on Thursday night, March 8.
Horny Bucks coach, Tshiamo Ngakane told Wits Vuvuzela, “I am happy with the performance, to win with a 30-point victory against a good team is a good start.” The team performed at a consistent level throughout the game while still also playing a high paced game which Ngakane said is a goal for the team in the 2018 season. “This season we want to play the game at a much faster pace than we did last season,” he added.
The team’s concentration and intensity dropped slightly in the final quarter of the game which Ngakane attributed to the discipline of players not being where it should be.
Another goal the team would like to achieve for 2018 is to focus on the defensive side of their game. Ngakane is confident that this will be rectified in time for University Sport South Africa (USSA).
There were three new players in the starting line-up on Thursday night; Siyabulela Macalagh, Tebogo Thibedi and Kgaogelo Sathekge. The players started playing for Wits basketball this year. The new boys will be in competition for places in the final team selected to participate in the Varsity Cup tournament in October.
Wits basketball sports officer Ntshembo Vukeya told Wits Vuvuzela, that the university has a first team squad of 18 players, only nine are selected to play on the day. This selection is made by the coach and is based on the chemistry between the players or the chemistry that the coach would like to create in the game.
The Wits Horny Bucks play their next ICSL match against the Goodfellas on Saturday, March 10 at the Wits Hall 29.
