The Wits fencing team put in a top performance at a recent tournament.
The Wits fencing team achieved what they consider to be their best performance in a national competition over the weekend, March 10 and 11, in Limpopo.
A team of six represented the university at the annual tournament hosted by the Fencing Federation of South Africa (FFSA). Andrea Cabanac won a a silver medal in the women’s foil category while Frankie Snyman and Daniel Chen finished in the top 8.
Snyman, the club chairperson and a postgraduate LLB student, told Wits Vuvuzela that, “If we look at the history of the teams, this was the best national performance of the fencers.” He said the holistic development of the team had improved from where it was three years ago.
Cabanac, speaking to Wits Vuvuzela said, “Our performance has improved remarkably since our last national tournament.”
Cabanac added that, “The team is looking to refine their performances at a provincial level to keep Wits fencers in the top five provincial rankings.” “My goal for this year is to fence for South Africa thus achieving national colours.” In order to achieve this goal, Cabanac needs to qualify for African Championships in Tunisia in June as well as the Commonwealth Games in Canberra at the end of the year.
