Sing and rap duo Blaque Nubon and Lilly Million gave a rousing performance to Wits students.
Award-winning Christian music artists Blaque Nubon and Lilly Million drew a lively audience of students with their open air concert that was held at the Wits Library Lawns on Tuesday, July 24.
The open air concert formed part of the pair’s ongoing national campus tour, Ultra Heights, and was organised by the Christian-based society, FOCUS. This performance marked the first time the pair included Wits in their campus tours.
The performance was aimed at giving Christian-based campus societies like FOCUS a greater reach within their respective universities.
Justin Roberts, who heads FOCUS at Wits, says that the campus tours give Christian societies a short window to advertise themselves. “The aim of the concert is to entertain students and for the performers to perform songs about their own religious experiences,” he said.
Nubon and Million have been performing professionally for the past seven years and have performed separately and as a married couple. Nubon has toured countries such as Germany, Sweden and Denmark, and has released two studio albums named Watchman (2014) and Exile Republic (2017). He has won awards such as the 2015 Mzanzi Gospel Music Award for Best Hip Hop Album and the 2016 SABC Crown Gospel Award for best Hip Hop Album. “My music is not just for Christians. My faith influences my worldview and I speak from it,” he says.
Million has opened for artists such as Oliver Mtukudzi, performed at festivals like OppiKoppi and has released three studio albums: On…Love, Truth and Freedom (2012), Traveller’s Rest (2015) and Crazy Believer (2016).
According to Million, the campus tour performances have proven more intimidating than the type of shows she normally performs. “You have to grab people’s attention. They’re eating lunch, they don’t have a reason to stay and they can leave mid-performance.”
Yet despite these factors, the performance still grew a sizeable crowd of interested students. Fourth-year medicine student Sfundo Nkosi was one of those who were attracted to the performance. “It’s a great performance. I like the music and the way they sing,” he said.
