FNB Wits took on FNB UWC in Johannesburg.
FNB WITS scored nine tries in its final home game match against Western Cape side, FNB UWC (University of Western Cape) on Monday, March 25.
The first try came within 20 minutes of start courtesy of Sicelo Champion. An effortless conversion by flyhalf Chris Humphries saw the Witsies go 7 points ahead. UWC closed the gap soon after by converting a penalty, taking the score to 7-3.
After the first strategy break FNB Wits opened the floodgates , finishing the first half, 39- 3. The tries were secured by CJ Conradie, Jared Fuller, Runaldo Pedro and Daniel Kasende.
During the second half, the Wits side came out confidently only to be given a run for their money by the back line of FNB UWC who were hungry to come back. Within a few minutes into the second half, FNB UWC scored a try which would be one of many during the game.
Wits responded to this a few minutes later with Conor Brockschmidt scoring another try which put FNB Wits in a comfortable lead. By the second strategy break, the scoreboard read 53-24 in Wits’ favour.
FNB Wits, however, was determined to keep up the momentum and create a comfortable distance. Philip Krause, Sipho Siboza, Constant Beckerling are to be credited for the final tries which gave FNB Wits a remarkable 74-40 victory.
“I just think we wanted to make the game enjoyable because there are players who have been fighting with us and it was their last game so we just wanted to make it special for them,” said FNB Player That Rocks and team captain, Constant Beckerling.
Wits Varsity Cup MC, Bongan “Mr Party Time” Lushaba said, “The win was expected. You have to understand that the FNB UWC side is new in the Varsity Cup league. However, in the second half the young side gave us a welcome challenge. Great performance by the boys!”
FNB Wits is currently 5th on the Varsity Cup log. On Monday, April 1, the team plays an away game against NWU at Fanie du Toit Sports Ground in Potchefstroom. This game will determine whether or not the FNB Wits makes it to the knockout rounds.
