Wits University dropped five places in the overall rankings and placed third in Africa on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking by Subject report released on February 28.
Wits University is ranked 364th out of about 950 universities globally and third out of 18 in Africa. In 2017, the University was ranked 359th.
Two subjects taught at Wits were ranked in the top 20 and one in the top 50. Mining engineering has been ranked 15 out of 50, moving up seven places from last year’s 22nd spot and development studies has been ranked 19 out of 100, moving one place up. Archaeology (ranked 38) has move up significantly from 2017’s 51-100 ranking range.
Three subjects were ranked in the top 200. Geography ranked in the 101-150 ranking range, remaining the same from last year. While English Language and Literature and Medicine have been placed in the 151-200 rankings with English moving down from 101-150.
According to the website, “The QS World University Rankings by subject are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject. Research citations, along with the results of major global surveys of employers and academics used to rank universities.”
