Police are investigating a case of murder and robbery.A DOVES employee was shot dead by armed robbers in Braamfontein on Monday afternoon.

The 65-year-old man was shot by two men who were robbing him while on his way to deposit a large sum of money at the ABSA bank on Jorissen Street on March 5. The police and paramedics arrived on the scene at around 15:36 and declared him dead, covering his body moments later.

According to an eye witness, Lindokuhle Ndlela, who was exiting the Braamfontein centre at the time of the incident, said that the two suspects approached the man who was carrying a red bag which is said to have been containing a large sum of money in it. “They approached the man, tried to grab a small red bag from his hands and then the victim tried to fight them so they do not get away with it. This is when one of the guys pulled out a gun and shot him twice at close range,” he said.

After the shooting, a female Wits medical student administrated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man, however, he lay unresponsive on the ground.

Hillbrow police spokesperson, Mduduzi Zondo, told Wits Vuvuzela that the victim was a messenger for Doves, a funeral company, who had been going to deposit money for the company at ABSA as he regularly does.

A co-worker at Doves said that this was not the first time he had been a victim of a robbery in Braamfontein while on duty. “He was robbed like a month ago, not too far from here,” she said.

A case of murder and robbery has been opened at the Hillbrow police station.
